The MHS men’s basketball team is on their way to their first state championship in 70 years after an away win against Longmont on Thursday night. The win pushes the Indians one game closer to a perfect season.

“It felt good,” said junior guard Fletcher Cheezum of the win. “All the work we’ve put in over the years to get to this point. But we’ve got one more to go. Job’s not finished.”

Montrose shot an electric 59% (20-of-34) from the floor, including 6-of-11 from three, including a buzzer-beating three from senior guard Jordan Jennings at the end of the third quarter. It was the team’s first time shooting above 50% from beyond the arc this season.

Montrose also took care of the ball, dishing out more assists (13) than turnovers (11) for the 12th straight game.

“We held our spots and did our roles and it was just a great team effort,” Head coach Ryan Voehringer said

The Indians are scheduled to play in the 4A state championship on Saturday against 5th seeded Mead.

“Looking forward to it,” Cheezum said.
